Indonesian Warm Spice Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Indonesian Warm Spice Blend

Grown out of Indonesia's rich spice trade history, this Warm Spice Blend is a staple in many households across the archipelago. Often used to infuse depth into traditional dishes, this blend brings the essence of Indonesia's vibrant culinary landscape straight to your pantry. The combination is a nod to the spices that traveled far and wide, finding their way into the heart of Indonesian cooking.

Expect a comforting warmth from the cinnamon, with cardamom lending its aromatic sweetness. Cloves add a robust depth, while black pepper provides a gentle heat. The touch of sea salt ties it all together, highlighting each spice's unique character. Use this blend to enrich curries, stews, or even sprinkle it over roasted vegetables for a delightful Indonesian twist.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Place a dry, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cardamom, 1 teaspoon of cloves, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they're ready when the spices release a rich, warm aroma and the cinnamon darkens slightly.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the toasted spices to a cool, flat surface, such as a baking sheet, to stop the cooking process. Allow them to cool completely, which should take about 10 minutes. This cooling step is crucial to prevent the spices from clumping when ground.
  3. Once the spices are completely cool, transfer them to a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Add 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the mix. Grind or combine the spices until you achieve a fine, consistent powder. The blend should be uniform in color and texture, with no visible chunks.
  4. Transfer the ground spice blend to an airtight container. Ensure the container is clean and dry to maintain the freshness of the spices. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to protect the spices from light and moisture.
  5. For the best aroma and flavor, use the Indonesian Warm Spice Blend within a few months. This blend is perfect for adding depth and warmth to a variety of Indonesian dishes, enhancing their authentic taste.
