Japanese House Rub 2

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Japanese House Rub 2

Japanese House Rub 2 is a versatile pantry blend that finds its place in many Japanese kitchens. Whether you're preparing a quick weeknight dinner or looking to add a nuanced layer of flavor to a special occasion meal, this blend offers a subtle yet impactful touch. Although its spices may have traveled across borders, they have been warmly embraced in Japanese culinary practices, adding depth without overshadowing the natural taste of the main ingredients.

This blend should awaken your senses with its earthy cumin and smoky paprika, balanced by the warmth of black pepper and the freshness of ground coriander. The fine sea salt ties these flavors together, enhancing the overall taste without overpowering it. Use it sparingly to season grilled meats or vegetables, allowing each element to shine through while adding a sophisticated complexity to your dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspground cumin
  • 2 tbsppaprika
  • 1 tbspground coriander
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tbsp ground cumin, 2 tbsp paprika, 1 tbsp ground coriander, and 1 tsp black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You will know the spices are ready when they release a warm, aromatic fragrance and the color deepens slightly, which should take a few minutes.
  2. Once the spices are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices to a cool, dry plate. Spread them out evenly to allow them to cool completely. This step is crucial to prevent the spices from clumping together when mixed with salt later.
  3. After the spices have cooled, combine them with 1 tbsp fine sea salt in a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Grind or mix the spices until they are evenly combined and the texture is uniform. This ensures that each use of the rub will provide a consistent flavor profile.
  4. Transfer the Japanese House Rub 2 into an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to protect it from light and moisture. This will help preserve its aroma and flavor.
  5. For the best aroma and flavor, use the Japanese House Rub 2 within a few months. This blend is perfect for adding a Japanese twist to your dishes, enhancing them with its warm and fragrant spices.
