Lebanese Chili Salt

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Lebanese Chili Salt

Lebanese Chili Salt is a pantry staple in Lebanese kitchens, a fiery blend that adds depth to everyday meals. Its roots are in the heart of Lebanese culinary tradition, where it transforms simple ingredients into something special. While not reserved for any particular occasion, this spice blend is a loyal companion to grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and even fresh salads, offering a burst of flavor whenever needed.

The taste is a vibrant mix of heat from the chili flakes, balanced by the savory notes of garlic powder and the earthy warmth of cumin. The fine sea salt ties it all together, creating a harmonious and bold seasoning. Sprinkle it generously to awaken dishes with its lively kick, and let your palate revel in its aromatic complexity.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin to the skillet. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon to prevent burning, allowing the spices to toast until they release a warm, aromatic scent and the chili flakes deepen slightly in color.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the toasted spices cool completely. This cooling step is crucial to prevent moisture from forming when you combine the spices, which could affect the texture and shelf life of your chili salt.
  3. Once the spices are cool, transfer them to a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Add 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder. Grind or mix the ingredients together until they are evenly combined, ensuring the mixture has a uniform texture.
  4. Transfer the blended Lebanese Chili Salt to an airtight container. Choose a container that seals tightly to keep out moisture and preserve the aroma and flavor of the spices.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight. This will help maintain the potency of the spices.
  6. For optimal flavor, use the Lebanese Chili Salt within a few months. Its vibrant aroma and taste are best enjoyed fresh, enhancing your dishes with a touch of Lebanese warmth.
