Paprika Spice Mix

Paprika spice mix is a fundamental seasoning in Eastern European kitchens, particularly renowned in Hungarian cuisine. It brings depth and authenticity to traditional dishes like goulash and various hearty stews. This blend of spices is often prepared in anticipation of autumn and winter, when the warmth of paprika-based dishes offers comfort against the chill.

The mix balances the sweet and hot notes of paprika with the savory punch of garlic and the distinctive earthiness of caraway. A touch of fine sea salt rounds out the flavors, making it an essential addition to any dish seeking that signature Eastern European taste. Sprinkle it generously over stews to unlock a vibrant, aromatic experience that warms both the dish and the diner.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspsweet paprika
  • 1 tbsphot paprika
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tspcaraway

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a small, dry skillet to toast the spices. Place it over medium heat and add 3 tablespoons of sweet paprika, 1 tablespoon of hot paprika, and 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they're ready when the aroma becomes rich and the color deepens slightly, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Once toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and let the spices cool completely in the pan. This cooling step is crucial as it prevents the spices from clumping when you mix them with the other ingredients.
  3. After the spices have cooled, transfer them to a small mixing bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of garlic powder and 1 tablespoon of fine sea salt to the bowl. Use a spoon or a small whisk to combine the ingredients thoroughly until the mixture is uniform in color and texture.
  4. For a finer texture, you may choose to grind the spice mix. If so, use a clean spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Grind the mixture until it reaches your desired consistency, being careful not to over-process, which can lead to clumping.
  5. Transfer the finished paprika spice mix to an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store the jar in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, to preserve the mix's vibrant flavors.
  6. For optimal aroma and potency, aim to use the spice mix within a few months. This blend is perfect for seasoning goulash, stews, or any dish that benefits from a warm, spicy kick.
