Pierogi Seasoning Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Pierogi Seasoning Blend

Pierogi, a beloved staple in Eastern European cuisine, are often filled with a variety of ingredients ranging from potatoes to cheese or even sweet fruits. The seasoning blend used for these dumplings can vary by region, but in many Polish homes, a specific mixture of herbs and spices is prepared to enhance the filling's flavor. This blend is a versatile companion to pierogi, elevating even the simplest ingredients with its aromatic charm.

The seasoning blend marries the earthy sweetness of marjoram and dill with the savory depth of onion powder and fine sea salt. A hint of black pepper adds a subtle kick, creating a balanced profile that complements the hearty fillings. This blend should feel like a warm embrace, bringing out the best in each bite of pierogi, while remaining understated enough to let the main ingredients shine.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspmarjoram
  • 1 tbspdill
  • 1 tbsponion powder
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tspblack pepper

Method

  1. Begin by setting a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of marjoram, 1 tablespoon of dill, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices gently with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You will know they are ready when the marjoram and dill release a warm, earthy aroma, and the pepper smells slightly pungent, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Once the spices are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices onto a plate to cool completely. This cooling step is crucial as it prevents the spices from clumping together when combined with the other ingredients.
  3. After the spices have cooled, place them in a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Add 1 tablespoon of onion powder and 1 tablespoon of fine sea salt to the mix. Grind or combine the ingredients until they are evenly mixed and the texture is consistent throughout.
  4. Transfer the blended spices into an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Ensure that the container is clean and dry to maintain the freshness of the blend.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight and moisture. This will help preserve the aroma and flavor of the seasoning blend.
  6. For optimal flavor, use the Pierogi Seasoning Blend within a few months. The spices will be most aromatic and potent during this time, enhancing the flavor of your pierogi fillings.
