Poultry Seasoning Mix

Poultry Seasoning Mix

Poultry seasoning mix is a cornerstone of American home cooking, especially during the fall and winter months when roast chicken and stuffing take center stage at holiday tables. This aromatic blend of herbs has roots in traditional English seasoning but has evolved in the United States to become a pantry staple, lending its distinct, savory warmth to Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas meals alike.

This blend should taste like a walk through a fragrant herb garden, with sage leading the charge, supported by earthy thyme, piney rosemary, and subtle marjoram. Fine sea salt amplifies the flavors, while black pepper adds a gentle kick. It's a seasoning that transforms simple poultry into a centerpiece, inviting the comforting nostalgia of family feasts with every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspsage
  • 1 tbspthyme
  • 1 tbsprosemary
  • 1 tbspmarjoram
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tspblack pepper

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet on the stove over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of sage, 1 tablespoon of thyme, 1 tablespoon of rosemary, and 1 tablespoon of marjoram to the skillet. Stir the herbs gently with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they're ready when the aroma becomes noticeably stronger and the herbs appear slightly darker in color, which should take a few minutes.
  2. Once the herbs are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and let the herbs cool completely in the pan. This cooling step is crucial to prevent moisture from forming when you grind or mix them, which could affect the texture and shelf life of your seasoning mix.
  3. Transfer the cooled herbs to a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Add 1 tablespoon of fine sea salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Grind or crush the mixture until it reaches a uniform consistency, ensuring that the herbs and spices are evenly combined.
  4. Once ground, transfer the poultry seasoning mix to an airtight container. A small glass jar with a tight-fitting lid works well. This will help preserve the freshness and potency of the spices.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat. Use the seasoning within a few months to ensure the best aroma and flavor, especially when preparing roast chicken or stuffing.
