Rice cooker

A pot that knows when the rice is done: the weekday hearth of Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese houses in the series.

Also called denki-gama, 밥통 · From East Asian home kitchens

A simple rice cooker with the lid open on steamed rice and a paddle resting beside it.

The journey

The rice cooker is young and already ordinary. Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese pages name it when the grain is the table and the cook has other work. It is not romantic. It is how those kitchens stay honest on a Tuesday.

A saucepan can cook rice. A cooker keeps it warm and keeps the week possible.

In the kitchen

Rinse until the water runs quieter. Measure. Close the lid. Trust the click. Fluff and serve.

The books treat this machine as assumed furniture in those three kitchens. If you are cooking from them, you already own one or you are about to.
