Chinese Fruit Drink

Chinese Fruit Drink is a refreshing concoction enjoyed in homes across China, where it's made with a simple blend of citrus fruits, sugar, and water. This drink is a staple at family gatherings, offering a sweet and tangy flavor that quenches thirst on warm days.

The taste is a harmonious balance of citrus brightness and sugary sweetness, with a hint of salt to enhance the flavors. It's a drink meant for sharing, embodying the communal spirit of Chinese dining, with each sip offering a taste of home.

Ingredients

  • 4lemons or oranges
  • 100 gsugar
  • 1 Lwater
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the citrus fruits. Take 4 lemons or oranges and wash them thoroughly under running water to remove any wax or residue. Use a sharp knife to cut each fruit in half, then squeeze the juice into a bowl, ensuring you catch any seeds. The fresh juice is the foundation of the drink, providing a vibrant and tangy flavor.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 100 g of sugar with 1 L of water. Stir gently to dissolve the sugar completely. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. You want the sugar to dissolve fully, resulting in a clear, sweet syrup without any granules.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the syrup to cool slightly for about 5 minutes. This cooling step is crucial to prevent the citrus juice from becoming bitter when mixed with the hot syrup.
  4. Add the freshly squeezed citrus juice to the cooled syrup in the saucepan. Stir gently to combine, ensuring the juice is evenly distributed throughout the syrup. This gentle mixing helps preserve the delicate aroma of the citrus.
  5. Transfer the mixture into a large pitcher. Add ice as needed to chill the drink rapidly, enhancing its refreshing quality. Stir the drink gently to ensure the ice is evenly distributed and the drink is well-chilled.
  6. Serve the Chinese Fruit Drink immediately in traditional glassware. The drink should be cold and refreshing, with a balance of sweetness and citrus tang. Enjoy the drink with family or friends, embracing the communal spirit of Chinese home cooking.
