Radler

Serves 4 to 6 Beverage vegetarian, Beverages

Radler

Radler, a refreshing blend of equal parts pale lager beer and sparkling lemonade, finds its origins in the sunny beer gardens of Bavaria. Traditionally enjoyed during warm summer days, this beverage was created to quench the thirst of cyclists, or 'Radler' in German, who would gather for a leisurely break amidst their journey. Its simplicity and balanced flavors make it a staple in German homes, where it is often replicated for a taste of Bavarian ease.

The Radler should greet the palate with a delightful balance of crisp beer and effervescent lemonade, offering a light, invigorating sip. The addition of ice enhances its coolness, while a slice of lemon provides a refreshing zest. Whether enjoyed outdoors or at a festive table, this drink captures the essence of relaxation and refreshment.

Ingredients

  • 300 mlpale lager beer
  • 300 mlsparkling lemonade
  • ice — optional
  • lemon slice — to garnish

Method

  1. Begin by ensuring that both the pale lager beer and sparkling lemonade are thoroughly chilled. Place them in the refrigerator for at least a few hours before you plan to make the Radler. This ensures the drink is refreshing and maintains the traditional cool temperature of a beer garden favorite.
  2. Once chilled, measure 300 ml of pale lager beer using a measuring cup. Pour it slowly into a large pitcher to prevent excessive foaming, which can cause the beer to lose its carbonation and crispness.
  3. Next, measure 300 ml of sparkling lemonade. Carefully pour it into the pitcher with the beer. Pouring slowly and at an angle helps preserve the carbonation and ensures a smooth blend of flavors.
  4. Gently stir the mixture with a long spoon, just enough to combine the beer and lemonade. Avoid vigorous stirring to maintain the effervescence, which is key to the Radler's refreshing quality.
  5. Fill serving glasses with ice cubes to keep the drink cold and refreshing. The ice will also help maintain the carbonation as the Radler is served.
  6. Pour the Radler into the prepared glasses, leaving a little space at the top to accommodate the garnish. This ensures each glass is filled with the perfect balance of beer and lemonade.
  7. Garnish each glass with a slice of lemon on the rim. This adds a fresh citrus aroma and a touch of visual appeal, completing the traditional presentation of this classic German beverage.
  8. Serve the Radler immediately to enjoy its refreshing taste and lively carbonation, reminiscent of a sunny afternoon in a Bavarian beer garden.
