Submarino

Serves 2 Beverage vegetarian, gluten-free, Beverages

Submarino

Submarino is the quintessential winter delight in Buenos Aires cafés, a drink that captures the playful spirit of the city’s colder months. This comforting beverage is named for the submarine-like plunge of a bar of dark chocolate into a steaming glass of milk. It's a cherished ritual, especially among children who eagerly watch the chocolate sink, transforming the milk into a rich and indulgent treat.

The result is a velvety, chocolate-infused concoction that envelops the senses with its deep cocoa notes and creamy texture. As the chocolate melts, it swirls into the milk, creating a decadent drink that’s both warming and satisfying. Each sip offers a perfect balance of sweetness and richness, making it an irresistible choice for a cozy afternoon or a chilly evening.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml (2 cups)whole milk
  • 2bars dark chocolate, about 40 g each

Method

  1. Pour 500 ml (2 cups) of whole milk into a medium-sized saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Warm the milk gently, stirring occasionally to prevent a skin from forming on the surface. Heat until the milk begins to steam and small bubbles form around the edges, but do not let it come to a full boil.
  2. While the milk is heating, prepare two heatproof glasses. Stand one bar of dark chocolate, about 40 g each, upright in each glass. Ensure the chocolate bars are positioned securely so they will not tip over when the milk is poured.
  3. Once the milk is steaming, carefully pour it over the chocolate bars in the glasses. Pour slowly to avoid splashing, ensuring the chocolate bars remain standing as the milk fills the glass.
  4. Using a spoon, gently stir the milk in each glass. As you stir, the chocolate will begin to melt and blend with the milk, creating a rich, dark mixture. Continue stirring until the chocolate is fully melted and the milk is evenly colored.
  5. Serve the Submarino immediately with a spoon. The drink should be smooth and well-mixed, with no visible chunks of chocolate remaining. Enjoy the warmth and richness of this classic Argentinian treat.
