Thai Yogurt Drink

Thai Yogurt Drink is a staple in the home kitchens of Thailand, enjoyed particularly during the sweltering hot months. It's a refreshing relief from the tropical heat and is often prepared by hand, with each family adding their own touch to the balance of salt and creaminess. Unlike the more commercial versions, this homemade delight is crafted with a generous hand, reflecting the warmth and hospitality of Thai home cooking.

Expect a velvety texture with a delicate tang from the yogurt, perfectly balanced by a subtle sprinkle of fine sea salt. The drink is served icy cold, making it an ideal companion for a leisurely afternoon or a shared family meal. Each sip is a cooling embrace, soothing and satisfying in its simplicity.

Ingredients

  • 400 gyogurt
  • 300 mlcold water
  • 1/2 tspfine sea salt
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by ensuring all your ingredients are ready. Take 400 g of yogurt and place it in a medium-sized mixing bowl. This will be the base of your drink, so make sure the yogurt is fresh and smooth, as this will affect the texture and flavor of the final drink.
  2. Measure 300 ml of cold water using a measuring cup. Slowly pour the cold water into the bowl with the yogurt. This step is crucial for achieving the right consistency, so add the water gradually to ensure the mixture remains smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Add 1/2 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the yogurt and water mixture. The salt should be evenly distributed to enhance the flavor without overpowering the drink. Stir gently with a whisk or a spoon, making sure not to whisk too vigorously, as this could cause the yogurt to lose its creamy texture.
  4. Once the salt is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth, prepare your serving glasses. Fill each glass with ice as needed. The ice will chill the drink further and provide a refreshing contrast to the creamy yogurt.
  5. Pour the yogurt drink over the ice in each glass, filling them to the desired level. Serve immediately to enjoy the drink at its freshest and most refreshing. This traditional Thai Yogurt Drink is best enjoyed cold, making it a perfect accompaniment to a warm day or a spicy meal.
