Tra Da

Serves 4 to 6 vegan

Tra Da

Tra Da is a staple across Vietnam, a refreshingly simple iced tea that graces tables from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. It is often enjoyed during hot afternoons, providing a soothing break from the tropical heat. Each family has its own way of preparing this ubiquitous drink, adapting it to suit their palates and the occasion. This version reflects the hands-on approach typical of Vietnamese home cooks, where each ingredient is adjusted by feel rather than measure.

The taste of Tra Da is subtle and refreshing, with the earthy notes of Vietnamese tea mellowed by a hint of sweetness and a splash of lime. The addition of ice transforms it into a crisp, cooling beverage that both quenches and comforts. Its simplicity is its strength, offering a moment of calm and a touch of sweetness in the midst of a bustling day.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspVietnamese tea
  • 500 mlhot water
  • as neededice
  • to tastesugar
  • 1 slicelime

Method

  1. Start by boiling 500 ml of water in a kettle or pot until it reaches a rolling boil. This ensures that the water is hot enough to extract the full flavor from the tea leaves.
  2. Place 2 tablespoons of Vietnamese tea into a teapot or a heatproof container. Pour the boiling water over the tea leaves, ensuring they are fully submerged to allow for even brewing.
  3. Let the tea steep for about 5 minutes. During this time, the tea will release its aroma and develop a rich, amber color, which indicates it is ready.
  4. Once the tea has steeped, strain it into a large pitcher to remove the tea leaves. This prevents the tea from becoming too bitter and allows for a smoother taste.
  5. Add sugar to the tea to taste, stirring gently to dissolve completely. This step is crucial for balancing the natural bitterness of the tea with a touch of sweetness.
  6. Fill serving glasses with ice, ensuring they are about three-quarters full. This will chill the tea quickly and create the refreshing cold temperature that is characteristic of Tra Da.
  7. Pour the brewed tea over the ice in each glass, allowing the ice to melt slightly and dilute the tea to the perfect strength.
  8. Garnish each glass with a slice of lime. The lime adds a fresh, citrusy aroma that complements the tea's earthy notes.
  9. Serve the Tra Da immediately in traditional glassware to enjoy its refreshing taste and aroma at their peak.
