Vino con Soda

Vino con Soda is a cherished refreshment, especially during leisurely lunches and family asados across Argentina. It hails from a tradition where wine meets soda water to extend the joy of a meal, ensuring the drink accompanies the conversation long into the afternoon. This is not the realm of cocktails, but rather a simple, time-honored practice that keeps the table lively and the spirits high.

The taste is light and refreshing, with the familiar robustness of table wine softened by the effervescent lift of soda water. Served over ice, it offers a crisp and invigorating sip, perfect for those warm, sunlit days when the hours seem to stretch beautifully before you.

Ingredients

  • 240 ml (1 cup)table wine
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup)soda water
  • ice — optional

Method

  1. Select two medium-sized wine glasses that can comfortably hold at least 360 ml (1 1/2 cups) of liquid. This will ensure there's enough room for both the wine and soda, as well as ice if desired. Clean the glasses thoroughly to enhance the clarity and presentation of the drink.
  2. Pour 240 ml (1 cup) of table wine into each glass. Choose a modest table wine, red or white, depending on your preference. The wine should be uncomplicated, as this drink is meant to complement a meal rather than stand alone.
  3. Add 120 ml (1/2 cup) of soda water to each glass, pouring slowly to prevent excessive fizzing. Adjust the amount of soda to taste, but aim for a balanced blend where neither the wine nor the soda dominates.
  4. If the day is hot, add a few ice cubes to each glass. The ice will keep the drink refreshingly cool, making it perfect for a long afternoon. Be careful not to add too much ice, as it can dilute the flavors.
  5. Serve the vino con soda immediately with your meal. This drink is designed to be enjoyed alongside food, enhancing the flavors of the meal and providing a refreshing contrast.
  6. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the wine throughout the afternoon, so keep the wine modest and the atmosphere relaxed. This is not a tasting event but a way to savor the company and the meal.
