Serves 4 to 6 Dessert vegetarian, Desserts

Pakistani Nut Sweet

Pakistani Nut Sweet, a cherished confection, graces the tables of homes across Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Islamabad. This dessert is a staple during festive occasions, often marking the end of a celebratory meal. Known for its comforting simplicity, it's a dish that brings warmth and generosity to the table, a hallmark of Pakistani hospitality. The recipe, passed down through generations, reflects the intuitive cooking style of Pakistani family kitchens.

The sweet offers a sublime combination of rich, buttery notes and the subtle crunch of nuts. The eggs add a delicate structure, while the sugar caramelizes to a perfect glaze, enveloping each bite with a golden sweetness. The result is a delightful balance of textures and flavors, best enjoyed at room temperature. It's a treat that invites sharing, embodying the convivial spirit of any gathering.

Ingredients

  • 200 gnuts — chopped
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 2eggs
  • 100 gflour

Method

  1. Start by taking 2 eggs and 100 g of butter out of the refrigerator. Allow them to come to room temperature. This will ensure that the eggs mix well with other ingredients and the butter creams smoothly, which is crucial for the texture of the sweet.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, melt 100 g of butter over low heat. Once melted, add 150 g of sugar to the pan. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture becomes a smooth, golden syrup. This process should be done slowly to prevent the sugar from burning.
  3. Crack the room temperature eggs into a bowl and beat them lightly. Gradually add the beaten eggs to the butter and sugar mixture, stirring constantly. This will create a custard-like base. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of the spoon.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and sift 100 g of flour into the mixture. Stir gently to combine, ensuring there are no lumps. The mixture should be smooth and slightly thick.
  5. Roughly chop 200 g of nuts of your choice and fold them into the mixture. Ensure the nuts are evenly distributed throughout the batter. The nuts will add texture and a rich, nutty flavor to the sweet.
  6. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish with a little butter and pour the batter into it, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating the sweet is set.
  7. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. This will help the sweet firm up and make it easier to cut into pieces. Serve warm or at room temperature, allowing the flavors to meld and the texture to be enjoyed at its best.
