Serves 4 Salad vegetarian, gluten-free, Salads

Ensalada de Palmitos

Ensalada de Palmitos is a nostalgic nod to the leisurely Sundays of 1970s Argentina, when families gathered to enjoy a simple yet elegant meal. This salad, featuring tender hearts of palm, juicy tomatoes, and perfectly hard-boiled eggs, has remained a staple at tables across the country. Despite its origins in a bygone era, it continues to bring a touch of ceremony to modern gatherings.

Mild and refreshing, this salad offers a delicate balance of textures and flavors. The creamy richness of salsa golf harmonizes with the crisp lettuce and the subtle sweetness of hearts of palm. Each bite is a cool, comforting reminder of its enduring appeal. Serve it as a starter or a side, and let its understated elegance speak for itself.

Ingredients

  • 400 g (14 oz)hearts of palm, drained
  • 2tomatoes, sliced
  • 2eggs, hard-boiled
  • 4 tbspsalsa golf or mayonnaise
  • lettucea few leaves

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a large serving platter. Arrange a few leaves of fresh lettuce evenly across the platter. This will serve as the base of your salad, providing a fresh and crisp contrast to the other ingredients.
  2. Take the drained 400 g (14 oz) of hearts of palm and slice them into uniform pieces, about 1 cm thick. Lay these slices in a neat row on top of the lettuce. This arrangement helps distribute the mild, tender flavor of the hearts of palm throughout the salad.
  3. Slice the 2 tomatoes into even, thin slices. Place these slices in a row parallel to the hearts of palm. The juicy, slightly acidic tomatoes will complement the creamy texture of the hearts of palm.
  4. Peel the 2 hard-boiled eggs and slice them into rounds. Arrange these egg slices in a row next to the tomatoes. The eggs add richness and a touch of color to the salad.
  5. Using a spoon, drizzle 4 tablespoons of salsa golf or mayonnaise down the center of the salad, over the rows of hearts of palm, tomatoes, and eggs. This creamy dressing ties all the flavors together with its tangy and slightly sweet notes.
  6. Lightly sprinkle salt over the entire salad to taste. This enhances the natural flavors of the ingredients without overpowering them.
  7. Chill the salad in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes before serving. This ensures the salad is refreshing and allows the flavors to meld together. Serve cold as a delightful and nostalgic dish reminiscent of Argentine Sunday lunches.
