Serves 4 to 6 vegan

Fruit Chaat

Fruit Chaat is a quintessential Pakistani street food delight, known for bridging the gap between a snack and a full-fledged meal. Often found at bustling street carts, it captures the spirit of spontaneous gatherings and impromptu feasts. This home version translates that vibrant experience into a family-friendly dish, where each ingredient is carefully selected and prepared with a personal touch, offering a taste of the lively streets within the comfort of your own dining table.

With its refreshing medley of apples, bananas, and guava, Fruit Chaat is an explosion of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors. The chaat masala and black salt introduce a depth that transforms simple fruits into a tantalizing treat, while a splash of lemon juice adds a bright, zesty kick. Each bite is a burst of texture and taste, making it an irresistible offering that invites seconds and thirds, perfect for sharing and savoring.

Ingredients

  • 2apples
  • 2bananas
  • 1guava
  • 1 tspchaat masala
  • 1 tbsplemon juice
  • 1/2 tspblack salt

Method

  1. Start by washing and drying the fruits thoroughly. Peel the bananas and slice them into thin rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Core the apples and guava, then cut them into small, bite-sized cubes. Keep the fruit pieces uniform in size for even flavor distribution.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced bananas, cubed apples, and guava. This bowl should be large enough to allow you to toss the fruit without spilling.
  3. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of chaat masala and 1/2 teaspoon of black salt over the fruit. These spices will enhance the natural sweetness of the fruit and add a tangy, savory flavor.
  4. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of lemon juice over the fruit mixture. The lemon juice not only adds a refreshing acidity but also helps to prevent the apples and bananas from browning too quickly.
  5. Using a large spoon, gently toss the fruit and spices together. Be careful to mix just enough to coat the fruit with the spices and lemon juice, but not so much that the fruit pieces become mushy.
  6. Once the fruit is evenly coated with the spices and lemon juice, taste a piece and adjust the seasoning if necessary. You may add a little more chaat masala or black salt according to your preference.
  7. Serve the Fruit Chaat immediately in a large serving bowl. It is best enjoyed fresh, while the flavors are vibrant and the fruit is crisp. Pair it with bread or enjoy it on its own as a refreshing snack.
