Chinese Chili Salt

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Chinese Chili Salt

Chinese Chili Salt, a staple pantry blend, finds its roots in the diverse culinary landscapes of China, where spices and simple ingredients come together to elevate everyday dishes. While it doesn't claim a specific festival or holiday, this blend is a versatile companion to meals, adding a layer of warmth and complexity that complements a wide array of flavors on the Chinese table.

With its aromatic punch from garlic powder and the earthy warmth of cumin, this chili salt offers a balanced heat from chili flakes, rounded out by the subtle brininess of fine sea salt. Each pinch delivers a burst of savory heat, transforming ordinary dishes into something truly special, without overshadowing their intrinsic flavors.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. In a small, dry skillet, add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin. Turn the heat to medium-low and stir continuously with a wooden spoon. Toast the spices until the chili flakes deepen in color and the cumin releases a warm, nutty aroma, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and immediately transfer the toasted chili flakes and cumin to a plate to cool. This prevents them from cooking further and possibly burning in the hot pan.
  3. Once the spices have cooled completely, place them in a mortar and pestle along with 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder. Grind the mixture until it is evenly combined and the texture is consistent, with no large pieces remaining.
  4. Transfer the blended Chinese Chili Salt into an airtight container. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed to keep moisture out and preserve the freshness of the spices.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight. Use the Chinese Chili Salt within a few months to enjoy its best aroma and flavor.
