Serves 4 to 6 Appetizer seafood, Appetizers

Tin Tuna Appetizer

Tin Tuna Appetizer stands as a staple on urban Ethiopian tables, bringing together the warmth of home cooking with the convenience of pantry staples. Emerging from the bustling kitchens of city dwellers, this dish effortlessly combines simplicity with flavorful generosity, making it a go-to for any casual meal. It's a common sight on tables where the aroma beckons diners to gather and share in the delight of everyday life.

The dish is a symphony of textures and tastes, with soft chunks of tuna mingling with the crispness of onion and the gentle heat of green chili. A squeeze of lemon juice brightens the flavors, while fresh tomato provides juiciness that binds the components together. Traditionally served with injera or bread, it offers a satisfying balance, inviting everyone to savor each bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 canstuna — drained
  • 1tomato — chopped
  • 1onion — finely chopped
  • 1green chili — optional
  • 1 tbsplemon juice
  • as neededinjera or bread

Method

  1. Start by finely chopping 1 onion and 1 green chili. This will ensure they blend well with the tuna, providing a balanced texture and flavor. Dice 1 tomato into small cubes, which will add freshness and a slight acidity to the dish.
  2. Open and drain 2 cans of tuna, ensuring to remove as much liquid as possible. This step is crucial to prevent the appetizer from becoming too watery, which would dilute the flavors.
  3. In a medium-sized skillet, add a tablespoon of oil and heat over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the chopped onion and green chili. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent and the chili is fragrant, which should take about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the diced tomato to the skillet and continue to cook, stirring occasionally. The tomato should soften and release its juices, creating a slightly thickened mixture. This step helps meld the flavors together.
  5. Gently fold in the drained tuna, ensuring it is evenly mixed with the vegetables. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, stirring to combine. The lemon juice will brighten the flavors and balance the richness of the tuna.
  6. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the tuna to heat through and absorb the flavors of the vegetables and lemon juice. The mixture should be moist but not soupy, with the tuna well-coated in the sauce.
  7. Remove the skillet from heat and let the mixture cool slightly. You can serve the Tin Tuna Appetizer warm or at room temperature, depending on your preference.
  8. To serve, place the tuna mixture on a platter and accompany it with injera or bread. The injera or bread will complement the flavors and provide a satisfying texture contrast.
