Peruvian Fruit Drink

Peruvian Fruit Drink is a refreshing staple found at home tables across Peru, where it's crafted with a simple blend of citrus, sugar, and water. This drink captures the essence of Peruvian hospitality, with its bright and tangy flavors offering a welcome reprieve from the day's heat.

The taste is a delicate balance of sweet and tart, achieved by the careful combination of lemons or oranges and sugar, all mixed into a chilled, thirst-quenching beverage. It's a straightforward yet delightful treat that reflects the uncomplicated joy of sharing a meal with family and friends.

Ingredients

  • 4lemons or oranges
  • 100 gsugar
  • 1 Lwater
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the citrus juice. If using lemons, roll them firmly on the countertop to loosen the juice. Cut each lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a bowl, using a strainer to catch any seeds. If using oranges, peel them and separate the segments before juicing them in a similar manner. Aim for about 250 ml of juice, ensuring it's fresh and vibrant in color.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 100 g of sugar with 1 L of water. Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar fully dissolves. The liquid should become clear, indicating the sugar is completely integrated. This forms the sweet base of your drink, essential for balancing the citrus.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. This step is crucial to prevent the citrus juice from cooking, which would alter its fresh flavor. Let it sit until it's just warm to the touch.
  4. Add the freshly squeezed citrus juice to the cooled sugar water. Stir gently with a spoon to combine, ensuring the juice is evenly distributed without losing its aromatic qualities. The mixture should have a balanced sweet-tart aroma, characteristic of Peruvian Fruit Drink.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a large pitcher and place it in the refrigerator to chill thoroughly. This step allows the flavors to meld and the drink to reach a refreshing temperature. Chilling is important to achieve the traditional crispness of the drink.
  6. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes to keep the drink cold. Pour the chilled fruit drink over the ice, filling each glass to the brim. The drink should be a pale, inviting hue, with a refreshing citrus scent.
  7. Serve immediately in traditional glassware, if available, to enhance the authentic experience. The drink should be enjoyed fresh, with the ice gently clinking in the glass, embodying the spirit of sharing and refreshment typical of Peruvian home cooking.
