Rooh Afza Sharbat

Serves 4 to 6 vegan, Ramadan

Rooh Afza Sharbat

Rooh Afza Sharbat is a cherished refreshment that graces Pakistani tables, especially during the month of Ramadan. As the sun sets and the fast is broken, this vibrant drink becomes a staple, offering a moment of sweet relief and hydration. Passed down through generations, the recipe is less about exact measurements and more about intuition, reflecting the warmth of family gatherings and shared traditions.

The drink offers a refreshing burst of floral sweetness, with the rooh afza syrup providing a rosy hue that is both visually and gastronomically appealing. The tang of lemon and the coolness of mint elevate the experience, making each sip a delightful interplay of flavors. Served cold, with ice clinking in glassware, it is the perfect antidote to a hot day or a long fast.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsprooh afza syrup
  • 800 mlcold water
  • as neededice
  • 1lemon
  • 1 handfulmint

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the base for your Rooh Afza Sharbat. Pour 800 ml of cold water into a large jug or pitcher. This will ensure that the drink is refreshing and chilled, which is essential for a traditional sharbat.
  2. Next, measure out 4 tablespoons of Rooh Afza syrup. Add the syrup to the cold water in the jug. Stir gently with a long spoon until the syrup is fully dissolved, resulting in a uniform pink color throughout the liquid. This careful mixing helps preserve the aromatic essence of the Rooh Afza.
  3. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice from one half into the jug. Be sure to catch any seeds with your hand or a small strainer. The lemon juice adds a subtle tanginess that complements the sweetness of the Rooh Afza.
  4. Take a handful of fresh mint leaves, wash them thoroughly, and gently bruise them with your fingers. Add the bruised mint leaves to the jug. This step releases the mint's fragrant oils, enhancing the drink's aroma and flavor.
  5. Add ice to the jug as needed, ensuring the sharbat is well-chilled. Stir gently once more to mix the ice and ensure even cooling. The ice not only chills the drink further but also slightly dilutes it, balancing the flavors perfectly.
  6. Serve the Rooh Afza Sharbat immediately in traditional glassware, such as tall glasses or tumblers. The vibrant pink color and refreshing aroma should be inviting, making it an ideal drink for sharing at a family gathering or during Ramadan.
