Serves 4 to 6 Dessert vegan, Desserts

Banana with Berbere Honey

Banana with Berbere Honey is a beloved staple in the everyday cooking of southern Ethiopia, where its inviting aroma is a familiar call to the table. This dish captures the essence of home cooking with its straightforward, generous flavors, echoing the warmth and comfort of family gatherings. It's not reserved for special occasions; rather, it graces the table as part of the daily rhythm of life.

The dish combines the natural sweetness of ripe bananas with the deep, spicy notes of berbere-infused honey. Each bite is a harmonious blend of silky fruit and a subtle heat, creating a delightful contrast that lingers on the palate. Its simplicity allows the ingredients to shine, offering a taste that is both comforting and intriguing.

Ingredients

  • 4ripe bananas — sliced
  • 3 tbsphoney
  • 1/2 tspberbere — optional pinch

Method

  1. Peel the 4 ripe bananas and slice them into thick rounds, about half an inch each. This size helps them hold their shape during cooking while allowing the flavors to penetrate.
  2. In a medium non-stick skillet, add the sliced bananas. Set the heat to medium-low, allowing the bananas to gently warm through without browning too quickly. You want them to become soft but not mushy, maintaining their structure.
  3. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of honey evenly over the bananas in the skillet. The honey will start to melt and coat the bananas, creating a sweet base that will carry the spice.
  4. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon of berbere over the honey-coated bananas. Use a spatula to gently stir and coat each banana slice with the honey and berbere mixture. The berbere should be evenly distributed, giving the dish its characteristic warm and spicy aroma.
  5. Continue to cook the bananas until they are tender and the honey has thickened slightly, about 3 to 5 minutes. The bananas should be soft to the touch but still hold their shape, and the honey should form a light glaze over them.
  6. Once the bananas are glazed and aromatic, remove the skillet from the heat. Allow the dish to cool slightly, as this will help the flavors to meld together.
  7. Serve the Banana with Berbere Honey warm or at room temperature. The dish should have a glossy appearance with a balance of sweet and spicy flavors, inviting everyone to enjoy this traditional Ethiopian treat.
