Chinese Fruit Compote

Chinese Fruit Compote is a cherished fixture in home kitchens, often crafted with the intuition of hand-measured salt and a liberal splash of fat. Its roots are firmly planted in the familial gatherings where the warmth of a shared meal is celebrated. This home-style version, precise yet flexible, captures the essence of how a Chinese family cook might naturally bring it to the table, embracing the spontaneity of seasonal produce.

Expect a harmonious blend of tender, cooked fruit, sweetened by sugar and gently spiced with a single stick of cinnamon. The compote should offer a comforting warmth, a balance of sweet and spice that lingers softly on the palate, embodying the simplicity and generosity of a home-cooked meal.

Ingredients

  • 500 gseasonal fruit
  • 150 gsugar
  • 200 mlwater
  • 1 stickcinnamon

Method

  1. Begin by selecting 500 g of seasonal fruit such as apples, pears, or peaches. Wash the fruit thoroughly, then peel and core if necessary. Cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces, ensuring uniformity for even cooking.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 150 g of sugar, 200 ml of water, and 1 stick of cinnamon. Stir gently to dissolve the sugar, then place the saucepan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle simmer, which will help infuse the cinnamon flavor into the syrup.
  3. Once the syrup is simmering and the sugar has fully dissolved, add the prepared fruit pieces to the saucepan. Stir gently to coat the fruit in the syrup, ensuring even distribution of heat and flavor.
  4. Continue to cook the fruit in the syrup over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Watch for the fruit to become tender but not mushy; it should hold its shape while being easily pierced with a fork. The syrup will thicken slightly and take on a light golden hue as the fruit releases its juices.
  5. Once the fruit reaches the desired tenderness and the syrup has thickened, remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the compote to cool slightly, which will help the flavors meld together.
  6. Serve the Chinese Fruit Compote warm or at room temperature, depending on your preference. The compote can be enjoyed on its own or as a topping for desserts like ice cream or cakes.
