Coffee Ceremony Popcorn

Serves 4 to 6 Dessert vegan, Desserts

Coffee Ceremony Popcorn

Coffee Ceremony Popcorn is a cherished staple of the Ethiopian buna ceremony, an integral part of daily life. As the coffee beans roast and the air thickens with the rich aroma, popcorn's familiar scent invites family and guests alike to gather. This humble snack is traditionally prepared with warmth and simplicity, embodying the spirit of communal hospitality without the need for grand gestures.

Expect each kernel to be a delightful contrast of crisp and tender, with a whisper of salt enhancing the natural corn sweetness. Its straightforward preparation allows the popcorn to serve as a comforting and grounding presence amidst the vibrant, sensory experience of the coffee ritual.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cuppopcorn kernels
  • 2 tbspoil
  • to tastefine salt

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed pot with a tight-fitting lid. This will help evenly distribute the heat and prevent the popcorn from burning. Add 2 tablespoons of oil to the pot and place it over medium heat. Allow the oil to warm up for about a minute until it shimmers, indicating it's ready for the kernels.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels to the pot, ensuring they are spread out in an even layer. Cover the pot with the lid, leaving a small gap to allow steam to escape. This prevents the popcorn from becoming soggy. Shake the pot gently every few seconds to ensure even cooking and to prevent sticking.
  3. Listen for the popping sounds to begin, which should start within a couple of minutes. Once the popping becomes rapid, continue shaking the pot occasionally. When the popping slows to about 2 seconds between pops, remove the pot from the heat. Let it sit for a moment to allow any last kernels to pop.
  4. Carefully remove the lid, watching out for any remaining steam. Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl. Sprinkle fine salt over the popcorn to taste, tossing it gently to ensure even distribution. The popcorn should be light, fluffy, and well-coated with salt.
  5. Serve the Coffee Ceremony Popcorn warm or at room temperature. Its aroma and flavor are best enjoyed fresh, complementing the rich, inviting atmosphere of a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
