Korean Fruit Compote 2

Korean Fruit Compote 2 is a comforting dish often found on Korean home tables, especially during the cooler months when families gather indoors. This version captures the essence of how it's traditionally prepared in Korean homes, with salt measured by instinct and fat applied with a generous hand, inviting everyone to share in its warmth and sweetness. It reflects the everyday, practical cooking that defines many Korean households, focusing on ease and comfort.

The compote shines with the natural sweetness of seasonal fruits, accentuated by a touch of sugar and the aromatic warmth of cinnamon. Its tender, syrupy texture envelops each piece of fruit, creating a delightful contrast between the firm fruit and the rich, spiced syrup. Ideal for sharing, it brings a sense of togetherness and warmth to any table it graces.

Ingredients

  • 500 gseasonal fruit
  • 150 gsugar
  • 200 mlwater
  • 1 stickcinnamon

Method

  1. Start by selecting 500 g of seasonal fruit, such as apples, pears, or persimmons. Wash the fruit thoroughly, then peel and core them if necessary. Cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces, ensuring they are uniform in size for even cooking.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 150 g of sugar and 200 ml of water. Add 1 stick of cinnamon to the mixture. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar is fully dissolved, creating a simple syrup.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, add the prepared fruit pieces to the saucepan. Stir gently to coat the fruit evenly with the syrup. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle simmer, ensuring the heat is not too high to prevent the fruit from breaking apart.
  4. Continue to cook the fruit in the syrup, stirring occasionally. You want the fruit to become tender but not mushy, which is indicated by the fruit retaining its shape while becoming translucent and soft to the touch.
  5. Once the fruit reaches the desired tenderness, remove the saucepan from the heat. Let the compote cool slightly in the saucepan, allowing the flavors to meld together and the syrup to thicken slightly.
  6. Serve the Korean Fruit Compote warm or at room temperature. You can finish it with a sprinkle of nuts or a drizzle of additional syrup if desired. This dish is perfect for sharing at the table, embodying the communal spirit of Korean home cooking.
