Peruvian Nut Sweet

Peruvian Nut Sweet is a delightful homemade treat, often found gracing the tables of Peruvian households during casual family gatherings or after a hearty meal. This dessert captures the essence of home cooking, where ingredients are combined with intuition and affection rather than strict measurements. The generous use of butter and a careful sprinkle of salt elevate this sweet from merely satisfying to utterly indulgent.

Rich and nutty, with a perfectly balanced sweetness, this dessert offers a satisfying crunch that melts into a tender crumb. The nuts lend an earthy depth, while the sugar and butter create a caramelized, buttery backdrop. Enjoy it as a simple yet luxurious finish to any meal, shared among family and friends.

Ingredients

  • 200 gnuts — chopped
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 2eggs
  • 100 gflour

Method

  1. Begin by taking 100 g of butter out of the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature. This will make it easier to cream with sugar later. Also, bring 2 eggs to room temperature by leaving them out for about 30 minutes. This helps them incorporate better into the batter.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the 100 g of butter over low heat. Once melted, add 150 g of sugar and stir continuously with a wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture becomes smooth. This should result in a glossy, thick syrup. Be careful not to let it boil, as this can cause the sugar to crystallize.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly. Once it is warm but not hot, crack the 2 room-temperature eggs into the mixture, one at a time, stirring quickly to prevent the eggs from cooking. The mixture should become creamy and well-blended.
  4. Gradually sift 100 g of flour into the saucepan, stirring gently to combine. The batter should be smooth and free of lumps, with a consistency that is thick but pourable. Ensure all the flour is fully incorporated before moving on to the next step.
  5. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). While the oven heats, prepare a baking dish by greasing it with butter. Pour the batter into the dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Scatter 200 g of nuts over the top, pressing them gently into the batter so they adhere.
  6. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. This should take about 25-30 minutes, but check for doneness by the color and texture rather than time alone.
  7. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack until it reaches room temperature. This will help the Peruvian Nut Sweet set properly. Cut into squares and serve at room temperature, allowing the flavors to fully develop and the texture to be just right for sharing.
