Thai Beef Skewers

Serves 4 to 6 Entree meat

Thai Beef Skewers

Thai Beef Skewers, a staple of home-cooked meals, are a beloved dish that graces the table during informal family gatherings and casual dinners. This recipe captures the essence of how Thai families enjoy their meals together, with a focus on simplicity and flavor. The skewers reflect the hands-on approach of Thai home cooks, where salt is added instinctively and generous use of fat ensures a rich and satisfying experience.

The skewers should offer a tender bite, with each piece of beef infused with the aromatic warmth of cumin. The crisp, slightly caramelized edges contrast beautifully with the juicy center, creating a harmonious balance. This dish invites communal dining, where everyone reaches for their share, savoring each flavorful morsel.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1 tspcumin
  • as neededskewers
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Start by seasoning the 800 g of beef cubes with fine sea salt and black pepper to taste. Sprinkle 1 tsp of cumin evenly over the meat, ensuring each piece is well-coated with the spices. Use your hands to gently massage the seasoning into the beef, which helps the flavors penetrate.
  2. Peel and finely chop 1 onion. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and fragrant, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Increase the heat to high and add the seasoned beef cubes to the skillet. Arrange them in a single layer, ensuring each piece has contact with the pan. Allow the beef to brown undisturbed for a few minutes until a deep, rich color develops on one side.
  4. Turn the beef cubes over to brown the other side, continuing to cook until all sides are evenly browned. The beef should have a caramelized crust, which enhances the flavor and texture.
  5. If you prefer to grill the skewers, thread the browned beef cubes onto skewers. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat and place the skewers on the grill. Cook, turning occasionally, until the beef is tender and cooked to your desired level of doneness.
  6. Once cooked, remove the beef from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring the meat remains juicy.
  7. Taste a piece of the beef and adjust the seasoning with more salt if necessary. Serve the Thai Beef Skewers with rice, bread, or a fresh salad, encouraging everyone to share and enjoy the meal together.
