Chinese Warm Spice Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Chinese Warm Spice Blend

Chinese Warm Spice Blend is a versatile pantry staple, drawing from the aromatic traditions of Chinese cuisine. It is not tied to a specific festival or occasion but finds its place throughout the year, ready to infuse warmth into a variety of dishes. This blend captures the essence of comfort and familiarity, a nod to the subtle yet impactful role spices play in elevating everyday meals.

The blend is a harmonious mix of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, and fine sea salt. It should taste warmly spiced with a hint of sweetness from the cinnamon, balanced by the aromatic depth of cardamom and cloves. The black pepper adds a gentle heat, while the sea salt ties the flavors together. Use it to impart a cozy, fragrant touch to both savory and sweet creations.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cardamom, 1 teaspoon of cloves, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure they toast evenly. You will know they are ready when the spices release a rich, warm aroma and the cinnamon darkens slightly in color.
  2. Once the spices are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices to a plate to cool completely. This cooling step is crucial as it prevents the spices from clumping when ground.
  3. After the spices have cooled, use a spice grinder or mortar and pestle to grind them into a fine, even powder. If using a grinder, pulse in short bursts to avoid overheating the spices, which can diminish their flavor.
  4. Combine the ground spices with 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt in a small bowl. Mix thoroughly to ensure the salt is evenly distributed throughout the spice blend.
  5. Transfer the Chinese Warm Spice Blend to an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to preserve its aroma and flavor.
  6. For the best aroma, use the spice blend within a few months. This blend is perfect for adding warmth and depth to a variety of Chinese dishes.
