Japanese Warm Spice Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Japanese Warm Spice Blend

A Japanese Warm Spice Blend is a pantry staple that finds its home in the heart of traditional Japanese kitchens. While not tied to a specific occasion, this blend is often used to infuse warmth into everyday dishes, especially when the chill of autumn and winter sets in. It mingles seamlessly with both savory and sweet preparations, offering a comforting embrace that enhances the season's bounty.

The blend combines the sweet, earthy notes of cinnamon and cardamom with the sharp warmth of black pepper and cloves, all balanced by a touch of fine sea salt. This harmonious mixture should feel both familiar and intriguing, warming the palate with its gentle spice and subtle complexity. It’s a versatile mix that invites experimentation, whether sprinkled over roasted vegetables or stirred into a hot cup of tea.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a small, dry skillet to toast the spices. Place the skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cardamom, 1 teaspoon of cloves, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir the spices gently with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. Continue stirring until the spices release a warm, aromatic fragrance and the cinnamon takes on a slightly darker hue.
  2. Once the spices are fragrant, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices to a clean, cool plate. Allow the spices to cool completely to prevent any residual heat from affecting the grinding process.
  3. After the spices have cooled, use a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle to grind them into a fine powder. If using a mortar and pestle, work in small batches to ensure an even texture. Add 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the ground spices and mix thoroughly to combine.
  4. Transfer the spice blend to an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Ensure the container is clean and dry to maintain the freshness of the spices.
  5. Store the Japanese Warm Spice Blend in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. This will help preserve its aroma and flavor.
  6. For the best aroma and taste, use the spice blend within a few months. Enjoy incorporating it into your Japanese dishes to add a warm, aromatic touch.
