Peruvian Chili Salt 2

Peruvian Chili Salt 2 is a pantry staple that brings the unmistakable heat and depth of Peruvian cuisine to life. This versatile blend is a go-to companion for any meal, offering a taste of Peru's rich culinary landscape right from your kitchen. Whether sprinkled over freshly grilled meats or added to a simmering pot of stew, it bridges the gap between everyday meals and the vibrant flavors of Peru.

This blend is a fiery yet balanced mix of chili flakes and fine sea salt, rounded out with the earthy warmth of cumin and the robust presence of garlic powder. The result is a spice mix that tingles with heat and finishes with a savory depth, perfect for amplifying the flavors of your favorite dishes without overpowering them.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Place a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin to the skillet. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know the spices are ready when the chili flakes turn a slightly darker shade and the aroma becomes robust and earthy, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the toasted spices to a plate to cool completely. This step is crucial to prevent the spices from continuing to cook in the residual heat of the pan, which could lead to a burnt taste.
  3. Once the spices are completely cool, combine them with 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder in a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. Grind or mix until the blend is evenly textured, ensuring that the salt, garlic powder, and toasted spices are fully integrated.
  4. Transfer the Peruvian Chili Salt 2 blend to an airtight container. Make sure the container is clean and dry to prevent any moisture from affecting the blend's texture and flavor.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to protect the spices from light and heat, which can degrade their aroma and potency over time.
  6. For the best aroma and flavor, use the Peruvian Chili Salt 2 within a few months. This blend is perfect for adding a spicy and savory kick to your favorite Peruvian dishes.
