Serves 4 to 6 Beverage vegan, Beverages

Brasileiro Spiced Tea

Brasileiro Spiced Tea is a cherished staple at Brazilian home tables, where it's brewed with an intuitive approach, reflecting the warmth and generosity of local hospitality. This version captures the essence of how families across Brazil prepare it, with salt measured by instinct and a liberal use of fats, creating a rich and inviting drink perfect for sharing.

The tea offers a harmonious blend of robust tea leaves and a medley of spices, balanced with a touch of sugar to suit your preference. The result is a soothing, aromatic beverage that warms both heart and home, inviting you to savor each sip in the company of loved ones.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsptea leaves
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastespices
  • to tastesugar

Method

  1. Start by bringing 500 ml of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Use a pot with a lid to ensure the water heats evenly and retains its temperature. Once you see a rolling boil, remove the pot from the heat to prevent over-extraction of the tea leaves.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of tea leaves to the hot water. Stir gently with a spoon to ensure the leaves are fully submerged. This gentle stirring helps release the tea's natural oils and flavors without making the brew bitter.
  3. Add spices to taste, such as cinnamon sticks, cloves, or star anise, directly into the pot. Stir gently to incorporate the spices into the tea. The warmth of the water will help the spices release their aroma, creating a fragrant blend.
  4. Allow the tea to steep for about 5 minutes, then taste to check the flavor balance. If the spices are too subtle, let it steep a little longer until the desired intensity is reached. The tea should have a deep, inviting aroma with a hint of spice.
  5. Strain the tea into a serving pot or directly into traditional glassware, using a fine mesh strainer to catch the tea leaves and spices. This ensures a smooth, clear tea without any sediment.
  6. Sweeten the tea to taste with sugar, stirring until fully dissolved. The sugar should enhance the natural flavors without overpowering the spices.
  7. Serve the Brasileiro Spiced Tea immediately while it's hot, using traditional glassware if available. The tea should be enjoyed fresh, with the warmth and aroma inviting everyone to gather around and share.
