Baked Figs with Honey & Walnuts

Baked Figs with Honey & Walnuts finds its roots in the sun-kissed orchards of the Mediterranean, where figs are cherished not just in the height of summer but well into early autumn. This dish is crafted for the everyday table, embodying the Aegean tradition of fruit desserts that capture the essence of both land and sea, with olive oil and lemon always within reach.

When you taste these figs, expect the sweetness of honey mingling with the earthy crunch of walnuts, all lifted by a whisper of cinnamon. Each bite is a reminder of how simplicity can sing with flavor, offering a soft, tender texture that echoes the warmth of Mediterranean hospitality.

Ingredients

  • 8fresh figs
  • 3 tbsphoney
  • 60 gwalnuts
  • 1 tbspextra virgin olive oil
  • pinchcinnamon

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to ensure it's ready for baking. Take 8 fresh figs and gently rinse them under cool water to remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel. Slice each fig in half lengthwise, exposing the beautiful interior. Arrange the fig halves, cut side up, in a single layer in a medium-sized baking dish.
  2. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil over the figs. This will help them bake evenly and add a subtle richness to the dish. Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon over the figs to enhance their natural sweetness and aroma.
  3. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven on the middle rack. Bake the figs for about 15-20 minutes, or until they become soft and their juices start to bubble around the edges. You'll know they are ready when the figs have a slightly wrinkled appearance and a sweet, fragrant aroma fills your kitchen.
  4. While the figs are baking, roughly chop 60 g of walnuts. Toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and emit a nutty fragrance. This will take about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Once the figs are baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly for about 5 minutes. This brief cooling period allows the flavors to meld together and makes the figs easier to handle.
  6. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of honey evenly over the warm figs. The heat from the figs will slightly melt the honey, creating a luscious glaze. Sprinkle the toasted walnuts over the top, ensuring each fig gets a generous amount of nuts.
  7. Serve the baked figs warm, allowing the honey and walnut topping to complement the soft, sweet figs. This dish can be enjoyed on its own or paired with a dollop of Greek yogurt for an added creamy contrast.
