Brasileiro Fruit Compote

Serves 4 to 6 Dessert vegan, Desserts

Brasileiro Fruit Compote

Brasileiro Fruit Compote is a cherished sweet treat found in homes throughout Brazil, prepared with a casual ease that speaks to its everyday nature. Rather than being reserved for special occasions, it's a staple that graces the table whenever there's a bounty of fresh, seasonal fruit on hand. Each family has its own version, but the essence remains the same: a simple blend of fruits simmered with sugar and a hint of cinnamon, capturing the spirit of Brazilian hospitality.

The compote is a luscious medley of tender fruit, lightly sweetened and gently spiced, creating a comforting aroma that fills the home. The cinnamon stick infuses warmth, balancing the natural sweetness of the fruit. Served warm or chilled, its syrupy texture is perfect for spooning over desserts or enjoyed on its own, allowing the vibrant flavors of the fruit to shine through with every bite.

Ingredients

  • 500 gseasonal fruit
  • 150 gsugar
  • 200 mlwater
  • 1 stickcinnamon

Method

  1. Start by preparing your fruit. Use 500 g of seasonal fruit, such as mangoes, papayas, or bananas. Peel and chop them into bite-sized pieces, ensuring uniformity for even cooking. Set aside in a bowl.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 150 g of sugar and 200 ml of water. Add 1 stick of cinnamon to the mixture. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely, forming a clear syrup.
  3. Once the syrup is ready, add the prepared fruit to the saucepan. Stir gently to coat the fruit evenly with the syrup. Continue to cook over medium heat, allowing the fruit to soften and absorb the flavors. The fruit should become tender but still hold its shape, and the syrup should thicken slightly.
  4. As the fruit cooks, keep an eye on the texture and aroma. The compote is ready when the fruit is tender and the syrup has a glossy sheen. The cinnamon stick will have infused a warm, spicy fragrance throughout the mixture.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the compote cool slightly. The cooling will allow the flavors to meld further and the syrup to thicken a bit more. Serve the compote warm or at room temperature, ensuring the cinnamon stick is removed before serving.
