Peruvian Fruit Compote

Peruvian Fruit Compote is a sweet and fragrant dish, often found at home tables across Peru. It's a simple yet delightful way to enjoy seasonal fruit, cooked with sugar, water, and a hint of cinnamon. The result is a warm, comforting mixture that highlights the natural sweetness of the fruit.

This compote is a staple in many Peruvian households, where it's prepared with a generous hand of salt and fat, reflecting the communal spirit of sharing. The combination of sugar and cinnamon creates a subtle spice that complements the fruit's flavor, making it a beloved treat for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 500 gseasonal fruit
  • 150 gsugar
  • 200 mlwater
  • 1 stickcinnamon

Method

  1. Begin by preparing 500 g of seasonal fruit. Choose a mix of fruits like apples, pears, or peaches, and peel and core them as needed. Cut the fruit into uniform bite-sized pieces to ensure even cooking. This will help the fruit absorb the flavors of the syrup evenly.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 150 g of sugar, 200 ml of water, and 1 stick of cinnamon. Stir the mixture gently over medium heat until the sugar completely dissolves. The cinnamon stick will infuse the syrup with a warm, spicy aroma, which is a hallmark of this dish.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, add the prepared fruit to the saucepan. Stir gently to coat the fruit with the syrup, ensuring that the cinnamon stick remains submerged to continue infusing its flavor.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and allow the fruit to simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. The fruit is done when it becomes tender yet retains its shape, and the syrup has thickened slightly, taking on a glossy appearance and a fragrant aroma.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and discard the cinnamon stick. Allow the compote to cool slightly in the pan. This will help the flavors meld together and the syrup to thicken further.
  6. Transfer the compote to a serving dish. You can serve it warm or allow it to cool to room temperature, depending on your preference. The compote should have a balanced sweetness with a hint of cinnamon, ready to be enjoyed as a comforting dessert or a delightful topping for other dishes.
