Brasileiro Warm Spice Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Brasileiro Warm Spice Blend

Brasileiro Warm Spice Blend is a versatile pantry staple that embodies the comforting essence of Brazilian home cooking. Often used to infuse warmth into a variety of dishes, this blend is a staple during the cooler months, when its aromatic presence graces everything from stews to baked goods. It's a nod to Brazil's rich spice trade history, where exotic spices became integral to local culinary practices.

The blend's flavor is a harmonious symphony of sweet cinnamon, floral cardamom, and the pungent depth of cloves, all balanced by a subtle kick of black pepper and a touch of sea salt. This spice blend should feel like a warm embrace, enhancing each dish with a comforting depth that lingers on the palate. Whether sprinkled into a hearty feijoada or dusted over roasted vegetables, it adds a uniquely Brazilian warmth to every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cardamom, 1 teaspoon of cloves, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices gently with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You will know they are ready when the spices release a warm, inviting aroma and the cinnamon takes on a slightly darker hue.
  2. Once the spices are fragrant, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices to a cool, dry plate. Spread them out evenly to allow them to cool completely. This step is crucial as grinding warm spices can lead to clumping and uneven texture.
  3. After the spices have cooled, combine them with 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt in a spice grinder or use a mortar and pestle. Grind or crush the mixture until it reaches a fine, even consistency. This ensures that the flavors are well-blended and balanced.
  4. Transfer the ground spice blend to an airtight container. Choose a container that seals tightly to preserve the freshness of the spices. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to protect the blend from light and moisture.
  5. For the best aroma and flavor, use the Brasileiro Warm Spice Blend within a few months. This blend is perfect for adding a warm, spicy depth to both sweet and savory Brazilian dishes.
