Indian Warm Spice Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Indian Warm Spice Blend

The Indian Warm Spice Blend is a pantry staple across the diverse regions of India, finding its place in both everyday meals and festive occasions. This blend is a reflection of the Indian penchant for layering flavors, often sprinkled into curries, stews, and even sweet dishes to add depth and warmth. It is not tied to a specific festival or event, but rather serves as a versatile enhancer that elevates the simplest of dishes.

With the sweet heat of cinnamon and the citrusy zing of cardamom, this blend offers a robust and aromatic profile. The cloves provide a hint of pungency, balanced by the gentle heat of black pepper, while a touch of fine sea salt rounds off the flavors. This blend is designed to awaken the senses, providing a comforting, warming sensation that complements a variety of Indian dishes.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a small, heavy-bottomed skillet, preferably non-stick, to ensure even heat distribution. Place the skillet on medium-low heat and add 2 tbsp of cinnamon, 1 tbsp of cardamom, 1 tsp of cloves, and 1 tsp of black pepper. Stir the spices gently with a wooden spoon to prevent burning, allowing the natural oils to release and the aroma to develop. You'll know they're ready when the spices emit a warm, inviting fragrance and the cardamom pods slightly puff up.
  2. Once the spices are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices to a plate to cool completely. This cooling step is crucial as it prevents moisture from forming when grinding, which could lead to clumping.
  3. After the spices have cooled, use a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle to grind them into a fine powder. If using a grinder, pulse in short bursts to avoid overheating the spices, which can alter their flavor. Ensure all spices are evenly combined, resulting in a consistent blend.
  4. Mix in 1 tsp of fine sea salt to the ground spices, stirring well to incorporate. The salt not only enhances the flavors but also helps preserve the blend.
  5. Transfer the Indian Warm Spice Blend to an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store the jar in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, to protect the spices from light and humidity, which can degrade their quality.
  6. For optimal aroma and flavor, use the spice blend within a few months. This ensures that the spices retain their potency and contribute the intended warmth and complexity to your dishes.
