Korean Warm Spice Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Korean Warm Spice Blend

Korean Warm Spice Blend is a versatile pantry staple that captures the essence of Korean culinary tradition. This blend is often used to infuse warmth and depth into a variety of dishes, enhancing soups, stews, and even marinades with its comforting aroma. While it may not be tied to a specific occasion, its presence in the kitchen is a nod to the balance and harmony cherished in Korean cooking.

The taste is a harmonious blend of sweet and spicy, with cinnamon's warmth leading the way, followed by the subtle citrus notes of cardamom and the boldness of cloves. A pinch of black pepper adds a gentle heat, while fine sea salt ties all the flavors together, creating a comforting and aromatic experience that lingers on the palate.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a small, dry skillet to toast the spices. Place the skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cardamom, and 1 teaspoon of cloves. Stir the spices gently with a wooden spoon to ensure even heating. Toast them until you notice a warm, aromatic fragrance rising from the pan, which should take a few minutes. Be attentive to the color; the spices should slightly darken without burning.
  2. Once the spices are toasted, remove the skillet from heat and let them cool completely. This step is crucial as grinding hot spices can lead to clumping and uneven texture. Spread them out on a plate to speed up the cooling process if needed.
  3. After the spices have cooled, transfer them to a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Add 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the mix. Grind the spices until you achieve a uniform, fine powder, ensuring that all ingredients are evenly combined.
  4. Once ground, transfer the spice blend to an airtight container. Choose a container that is opaque or store it in a dark place to protect the spices from light, which can degrade their flavor over time.
  5. Label the container with the date of preparation. For the best aroma and flavor, aim to use the Korean Warm Spice Blend within a few months. This blend will enhance various Korean dishes, adding depth and warmth to your cooking.
