Indian Spiced Tea

Indian Spiced Tea, or Masala Chai as it's fondly called in India, is a staple in Indian homes, prepared for both the quiet morning moments and the lively afternoon conversations. The tradition runs deep in Indian households where the art of balancing spices is passed down through generations. Each region has its own secret blend, yet the essence remains the same – a warm, inviting brew that brings comfort.

Expect a robust symphony of aromatic spices and bold tea leaves, harmonized with just the right touch of sugar. It's a drink that wraps around you like a cozy blanket, with each sip offering a burst of warmth and flavor. Enjoyed best with friends or family, it turns any gathering into a cherished memory.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsptea leaves
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastespices
  • to tastesugar

Method

  1. Start by selecting a medium-sized saucepan, as this will allow the tea to brew evenly. Pour 500 ml of water into the saucepan and place it on the stove over medium heat. This initial step is crucial for ensuring that the water reaches the right temperature for extracting flavors from the tea leaves and spices.
  2. Once the water begins to gently simmer, add 2 tablespoons of tea leaves to the saucepan. Stir them briefly to ensure they are fully submerged. This helps the leaves release their full flavor into the water, creating a rich base for your spiced tea.
  3. Now, add your choice of spices to the simmering tea. Common options include cardamom, cloves, ginger, or cinnamon, but you can adjust the spices to your taste. Stir gently to incorporate the spices, allowing their aromas to infuse into the tea. You'll know it's ready when the fragrance of the spices becomes prominent and the tea takes on a deep, amber color.
  4. Add sugar to taste, keeping in mind that traditional Indian Spiced Tea is often quite sweet. Stir the sugar into the tea until it dissolves completely. Taste the tea and adjust the sweetness if necessary, as this is a personal preference and can vary widely.
  5. Once the tea has reached your desired flavor profile, turn off the heat. Let the tea sit for a minute to allow the flavors to meld together. This resting period enhances the depth of flavor and ensures a smooth taste.
  6. Strain the tea into a teapot or directly into serving glasses, using a fine mesh strainer to catch the tea leaves and spices. This step is important to ensure a clear, smooth tea without any residue.
  7. Serve the Indian Spiced Tea immediately in traditional glassware, if available. The warmth and aroma are best enjoyed fresh, making it a delightful experience for sharing with family or guests.
