Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Baklava Spice Mix

Baklava Spice Mix is a fragrant blend that brings the essence of Greek desserts to life. This aromatic combination of spices is a staple in the preparation of baklava, a beloved Greek pastry known for its delicate layers and syrupy sweetness. While baklava is enjoyed year-round, it is particularly cherished during festive occasions and celebrations, where its rich flavors are a centerpiece of the dessert table.

The mix of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg creates a warm, inviting profile that envelopes the palate with each bite. The subtle sweetness and a hint of saltiness balance the flavors, enhancing the natural richness of nuts and the sticky allure of syrup. This spice mix transforms any pastry into a sensory delight, capturing the essence of Greek indulgence in every sprinkle.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbspground cinnamon
  • 1 tspground cloves
  • 1 tspground nutmeg
  • 1 tbspfine sugar
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ground cloves, and 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Use a whisk or a fork to thoroughly mix these spices together until the color is uniform and there are no visible clumps, ensuring that the flavors are evenly distributed.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of fine sugar and 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the spice mixture. Continue to stir with the whisk or fork, making sure the sugar and salt are fully incorporated into the spices. The mixture should have a consistent texture and color, indicating that the ingredients are well blended.
  3. Before using the spice mix in Baklava, toss it with chopped walnuts. This will ensure that the nuts are evenly coated with the aromatic spices, enhancing their flavor when layered into the pastry.
  4. For a subtle flavor boost, add a pinch of this spice mix to Rizogalo (Greek rice pudding) or Karydopita (Greek walnut cake). The spices will add a warm, aromatic note to these traditional desserts.
  5. Transfer the spice mix to an airtight container for storage. This will preserve the freshness and potency of the spices, allowing you to enjoy their full flavor whenever you use them in your cooking.
