Date Shake

Serves 2 Beverage vegetarian, Beverages

Date Shake

The Date Shake, a delightful fusion of dates and milk, is often enjoyed during iftar, marking the end of a day of fasting with nourishing sweetness. It's also a quick, refreshing treat for those navigating the Sahara, where its ingredients are a staple. This simple yet satisfying beverage transforms soft dates into a creamy indulgence, needing little sugar due to the natural sweetness of the fruit.

When sipped, the shake offers a lush, velvety texture, with a subtle hint of cinnamon adding warmth to each gulp. The chill from the ice rounds out the experience, ensuring each mouthful is both refreshing and soothing.

Ingredients

  • 8soft dates, pitted
  • 400 mlcold milk
  • pinchcinnamon
  • 1/2 cupice — optional

Method

  1. Begin by preparing your dates. Take 8 soft dates and ensure they are pitted. If they are not already pitted, use a small paring knife to carefully slice them open and remove the pits. This ensures a smooth texture in your shake without any hard bits.
  2. In a blender, combine the pitted dates with 400 ml of cold milk. The cold milk will help to keep the shake refreshing and aid in blending the dates smoothly. Add a pinch of cinnamon to the mixture, which will provide a warm, aromatic flavor that complements the sweetness of the dates.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of ice to the blender. The ice will chill the shake further and give it a thicker, more refreshing consistency. Ensure the lid is securely placed on the blender to prevent any spills or splashes.
  4. Blend the mixture on high speed until it becomes smooth and creamy. You may need to stop the blender and use a spatula to scrape down the sides if the dates are sticking. The shake is ready when there are no visible chunks of date and the texture is uniformly smooth.
  5. Pour the date shake into a glass. The shake should have a creamy, slightly frothy appearance. Sprinkle a light dusting of cinnamon on top for an extra touch of flavor and aroma.
  6. Serve the date shake immediately while it's cold and refreshing. Enjoy the natural sweetness and the harmonious blend of dates and cinnamon in every sip.
